A total of 224 licensed radio stations in Ghana are currently inactive, according to the latest report by the National Communications Authority (NCA).
Bernard Amissah-Ocran, Acting Director of Engineering at the NCA, disclosed that out of 763 authorized FM stations nationwide, only 539 are on air, while the remaining 224 have either not started operations or are off-air.
He revealed this during the Broadcasting at the Crossroads forum, organized by the Africa Media Bureau in Accra on Friday, September 26.
The NCA’s second-quarter 2025 report highlights regional distribution, with the Ashanti Region leading at 116 authorized stations (85 active, 31 inactive). The Western Region follows with 88 (59 active, 29 inactive), while the Greater Accra Region has 84 (71 active, 13 inactive).
On the lower end, the North East Region has the fewest with 13 licensed stations, only 7 of which are operational. Several other regions, including Western, Central, Eastern, Northern, and Volta, also recorded significant numbers of inactive stations.
By classification, the 763 authorized FM stations comprise 31 public stations, 155 community stations, 5 campus stations, 548 commercial stations, and 24 foreign-authorized stations.
