A tragic accident on March 6, 2023, has resulted in the death of 23 people and several injuries on the Kintampo Tamale Highway. The accident, which occurred around 11:45 pm near the Kintampo waterfalls, involved a Grandbird Bus and an articulated truck loaded with floor tiles.
The Grandbird Bus, with 52 passengers onboard, was traveling from Yendi in the Northern region to Kumasi, while the articulated truck was heading towards Tamale. The exact cause of the accident is yet to be established, but some eyewitnesses claim it was a result of a head-on collision between the two vehicles after the driver of the articulated truck attempted to avoid a broken-down vehicle on the roadside.
Among the injured, 18 victims have been treated and charged, and four others in critical condition have been referred to the Tamale Teaching Hospital for further treatment. However, the delay in referring the injured to more advanced hospitals was due to the unavailability of beds.
The driver of the Grandbird Bus, his mate, and the articulated truck driver are currently helping the Kintampo Divisional Police Command in investigations. Seven out of the 23 dead bodies have been identified and are being prepared for burial in Kintampo.
The Bono East Regional Minister and the Kintampo North Municipal Chief Executive, together with the Kintampo Divisional Police Commander, have visited the accident scene and the victims at the hospital to commiserate with them. The Medical Superintendent of the Kintampo Municipal Hospital has also confirmed that six of the victims are in critical condition and are being prepared to be referred to other hospitals for further treatment.
