Former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament Sarah Adwoa Safo has rejected claims that she influenced the date set for her late father’s funeral, insisting that the date was approved by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
She explained that due to her father’s royal background in the Ashanti Region, the family engaged the Manhyia Palace throughout the funeral arrangements before a date was agreed upon.
Her comments follow concerns raised by her brother, Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena I, Head of the Safo Family and leader of the Kristo Asafo Mission of Ghana, who stated that disagreements surrounding the funeral arrangements remained unresolved, making it difficult to confirm the burial date.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Tuesday, July 28, Sarah Adwoa Safo said preparations began in October after the family completed the 40-day rites for their late father.
She noted that the family sought the guidance and approval of the Asantehene because of her father’s royal status.
“My father is from a royal background from the Ashanti Region, and so for a royal of his calibre, we couldn’t have done anything without consulting the King of the Ashanti Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II,” she stated.
According to her, after several consultations with Manhyia Palace, the Asantehene approved the funeral date after being satisfied with the arrangements made by the family.
She stressed that the date was not a personal decision but one that came from the palace.
“That date is not my date. That date is from the palace,” she said, adding that anyone seeking a change should direct their concerns to the authority that approved it.
