“Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament Leads Delegation to Inter-Parliamentary Union Conference in Bahrain”

Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, the Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, is leading a delegation of high-ranking Ghanaian officials to attend the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) conference in Manama, Bahrain. The 146th Assembly of the IPU and its affiliated meetings are scheduled to take place in the Arab nation from Saturday, March 11 to Wednesday, March 15, 2023.

 

The Assembly will be attended by all IPU statutory bodies, including the Governing Council, Standing Committees, Committees on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians and on Middle East Questions, as well as the Forum of Women Parliamentarians and the Forum of Young MPs. The General Debate will provide a forum for participants to discuss, exchange ideas, and encourage parliamentary action in the area of combating intolerance and promoting peaceful coexistence.

 

Speaker Bagbin’s Ghanaian parliamentary delegation is composed of leaders from both sides of the House, Majority and Minority Leaders Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu and Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, respectively. The delegation also includes First Deputy Minority Whip Ahmed Ibrahim and Second Deputy Majority Whip Habib Iddrisu, as well as female MPs Patricia Appiagyei and Dzifa Gomashie, Director of Parliamentary Relations & Protocol Sheba Nana Afriyie-Osei, Head of the Speaker’s Secretariat Richard Acheampong, and others.

The delegation will represent Ghana’s interests, including those of Parliament, at the conference and related meetings. The conference, which is themed “promoting peaceful coexistence and inclusive societies: fighting intolerance,” will explore and share ideas and perspectives on strengthening democracy worldwide.

 

The IPU is the global organization of national parliaments, founded over 133 years ago as the world’s first multilateral political organization, promoting cooperation and dialogue between all nations. The IPU is made up of 178 national Member Parliaments and 14 regional parliamentary bodies, promoting democracy and assisting parliaments in becoming stronger, younger, gender-balanced, and more representative. It also defends the human rights of parliamentarians through a dedicated committee of MPs worldwide
