During his State of the Nation Address to Parliament on March 8, 2023, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo expressed concern over the current shortage of certain childhood vaccines in Ghana.
He stated that the country’s Childhood Immunisation Programme, which has been widely recognized as one of the world’s most successful, could be negatively affected if the vaccine shortage continues. The President noted that the World Health Organization (WHO) had recently expressed concern about the global decline in measles vaccination coverage due to the focus on COVID-19.
He emphasized that the government would take urgent steps to procure and supply the necessary vaccines to ensure that the programme does not follow this trend. The President stated that the Ghana Health Service had developed an extensive plan to catch up on vaccinations for children who missed their shots as soon as the new stocks arrived.
He encouraged all parents and caregivers to ensure that eligible children receive the vaccines. The President reassured the public that no child had died as a result of the shortage thus far and urged that no child should be denied access to vaccination.
