Sylvia Owusu-Ankomah, CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, has warned that SIM registration alone will not eliminate mobile fraud. In an interview with Citi Business News, she explained that fraud is primarily driven by social engineering, where scammers impersonate trusted figures to trick users into revealing sensitive information like PINs.

Owusu-Ankomah emphasized that protecting personal details, especially PINs, is key to preventing fraud. She also stressed the need for consumer education, urging subscribers to ensure their SIM cards are properly registered and to avoid purchasing pre-registered cards, which can be linked to criminal activity.

The government’s upcoming SIM re-registration will link numbers to the national ID database, increasing accountability. However, mobile users are still urging stronger measures to address mobile money fraud, as scams continue despite previous registration efforts.
