The Municipal Chief Executive for Bawku Municipal, Azunaba Isaac, has praised residents of Bawku, especially the youth, for their cooperation and understanding as efforts to restore peace in the area continue.

Speaking to Atungo Iddrisu Kassim, the MCE said he inherited a difficult and challenging situation when he assumed office. However, with the support from the Upper East Regional Minister Donatus Atanga Akamugri, the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central Mahama Ayariga, and current security arrangements, calm has gradually returned to the municipality.

He attributed the progress to his administration’s strategy of engaging the youth, cooperating with them, listening to their grievances, and addressing them one after the other.

The MCE assured residents that peace will finally return to the area despite the security challenges. Azunaba added that development is not on hold. He revealed that 12 projects have been awarded and are currently ongoing in the Bawku Municipality. These projects include fixing roads within Bawku and other areas to link the municipality to surrounding communities, construction of CHPS compounds, construction of schools, and water projects.

Bawku has lagged behind in terms of development due to the protracted conflict, but the MCE assured that efforts are underway to reverse the situation.

The Municipal Chief Executive also expressed deep concern over how the conflict has affected government business and individual businesses within the municipality. According to him, the majority of workers from the District Assembly, health sector, education, and many other sectors have fled the town due to the prolonged conflict. He said this mass exodus has crippled service delivery and slowed economic growth in Bawku.

Meanwhile, following the recent attack and kidnap of one teacher at Bawku Senior High School and the destroying properties o belonging to the school and the teachers, security personnel have been deployed to the school. Information available so far indicates that four final year students have been arrested. More suspects are on the run as investigations into the incident continue.
