The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called for the immediate release of its Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, following the acquittal of former Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu.
The party argues that the Court of Appeal’s decision to overturn Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu’s 10-year prison sentence raises questions about the continued detention of Chairman Wontumi, who is currently facing criminal charges.
According to the NPP, the development has strengthened its belief that individuals accused of offences must be given fair treatment under the law and that justice should be applied equally to all citizens.
The party is demanding that authorities review Chairman Wontumi’s case and take steps to secure his release, insisting that his continued detention is unfair.
The Court of Appeal on Thursday, July 30, acquitted and discharged Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu after ruling that the prosecution failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt.
The ruling has since sparked discussions within political circles, with the NPP using the decision to renew calls for what it describes as equal justice and due process.
