The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced plans to hold a nationwide demonstration dubbed “Democracy Under Attack” on Thursday, August 6, 2026.
The party says the protest is aimed at drawing attention to what it describes as growing threats to Ghana’s democratic governance and concerns over the protection of civil liberties.
According to the NPP, the demonstration will begin at 6:00 a.m. at the Supreme Court and end at the Jubilee House, with supporters expected to participate under the hashtags #DemocracyUnderAttack, #SaveGhanaNow, and #SayNoToStateCapture.
NPP communications team member and spokesperson for former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, said the protest is in response to what he described as attempts to suppress dissent and weaken democratic institutions.
He alleged that recent arrests of opposition figures, media practitioners and other individuals, as well as concerns over bail conditions and the relationship between state institutions, pose a threat to Ghana’s democracy.
Mr Aboagye called for equal treatment under the law and urged authorities to avoid what he termed selective justice, stressing that governments must tolerate criticism in a democratic society.
The NPP maintains that the protest is intended to defend civil liberties, the rule of law and democratic accountability.
Meanwhile, the government has rejected claims of targeting political opponents, insisting that law enforcement agencies and the judiciary operate independently and that all arrests and prosecutions are conducted according to the law.
