President Akufo-Addo has said that the election of 44-year-old Senegalese President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has inspired many young Ghanaians to aspire to ascend the highest office of the land.

He says the election has boosted the ambitions of many young Ghanaians who now believe they can also make it like he did in Senegal.

He made the comments during his address to the press after a bilateral talk with President Faye at the Jubilee House Friday, May 17, 2024.

“…so we’re very happy to have you here, Mr President, as I indicated to you. And I also told you what your election has done for all the young people in Ghana. It’s made them all very ambitious.

“They all want to be president of this country now. So this is the example that you have set. It’s a very good example, and we wish you the very best that these responsibilities that you have taken,” he stated.

Describing the impact of the Senegal polls on the democratic credentials of the sub-region, President Akufo-Addo said he personally attended Mr. Faye’s inauguration “because it appeared at one time as if Senegal’s reputation as a country committed to the principles of democratic accountability, respect for human rights, rule of law, was being jeopardized.”

“But fortunately, good sense prevailed, elections were held, and out of the elections, Mr Faye emerged as the clear, convincing winner of the elections. And the manner in which he ascended to the presidency has brought peace and unity to his country, and that again, that Senegal is going to play a very important role in the development of the ECOWAS community has now been fully confirmed,” he added.
He charged President Faye to emulate the credentials bequeathed Senegal by some of his predecessors. “You are in the line of great leaders that Senegal has had in the past, and now it’s your turn to see what you can do.”
