President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghanaians to adopt responsible environmental practices following a viral video showing fish-drying activities being carried out under poor sanitary conditions at Tema New Town.
The video, shared by environmental advocacy group Buz Stop Boys, captured heaps of waste around an area where fish was being prepared for sale, sparking public concerns over sanitation, food safety and public health.
Addressing worshippers during the Men Ministry Day Celebration at the Ringway Gospel Centre Assemblies of God Church on Sunday, August 2, President Mahama said the footage highlighted the need for citizens to play an active role in keeping their communities clean.
He noted that while authorities have a responsibility to address sanitation challenges, citizens must also change their attitudes towards waste disposal and environmental protection.
The President warned that indiscriminate dumping of waste into drains after floods subside contributes to future flooding, as items such as sachet water plastics, Styrofoam and food packaging often block drainage systems.
He urged Ghanaians to take ownership of their surroundings and ensure that their actions reflect a commitment to protecting the environment.
Referencing James 2:17 from the Bible, President Mahama stressed that faith must be accompanied by action, saying positive change must be reflected in people’s daily behaviour.
His comments come amid renewed public discussions on sanitation, waste management and the effects of poor environmental practices on public health and flooding.
