Koforidua High Court Convicts Woman of Manslaughter After Brutal Acid Attack on Boyfriend

Koforidua, Ghana — In a shocking case that has gripped the Eastern Region, the Koforidua High Court has convicted 25-year-old Vera Asare of manslaughter following a vicious acid attack on her boyfriend, Daniel Omane. The attack, which occurred while Omane was asleep, left him with severe burns that ultimately proved fatal after months of medical treatment.

According to court records, Vera admitted in court that she poured acid on Omane without provocation, an act that disfigured him and caused unimaginable pain. Omane, a mobile phone dealer in Koforidua, spent months in hospital undergoing intensive care but died from complications related to his injuries in late 2025.

Vera pleaded guilty under a plea deal recommending a 10-year prison term, but the court has adjourned sentencing to 11 March 2026 to consider additional factors, including a pregnancy test and other personal circumstances. The adjournment has heightened public attention on the case, with discussions around domestic violence, the dangers of corrosive substances, and legal accountability taking center stage.

Friends and family of Omane, who leave behind a young child, have expressed shock and sorrow over his death, calling for justice and measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. Meanwhile, the case serves as a stark reminder of the lethal consequences of acid attacks and the need for both legal enforcement and societal awareness to protect victims of domestic violence.

This court ruling marks a pivotal step in the legal proceedings, but it also leaves lingering questions about how such tragedies can be prevented and how survivors and families can be supported.
