Gov’t Distributes Seized ‘Galamsey’ Water Pumps to Farmers to Boost Irrigation – John Dumelo
Deputy Minister of Agriculture, John Dumelo, has announced that the government is distributing thousands of water pumps seized from illegal mining activities to farmers nationwide, aiming to support irrigation farming. Speaking on Joy News about Ghana’s food sovereignty, 69 years after independence, Mr. Dumelo explained that this initiative is part of the government’s immediate efforts to boost irrigation and increase food production.

The water pumps, which were confiscated during anti-galamsey operations, are now being redirected to farmers who require irrigation systems for year-round crop cultivation. According to Mr. Dumelo, over a thousand of these pumps have already been distributed across the country, providing an urgent solution to the irrigation needs of many farmers.
While the distribution of these seized pumps offers a quick remedy, the government is also focused on long-term strategies to strengthen irrigation infrastructure. This includes large-scale projects like the development of the Kpong Left Bank irrigation scheme, which, although time-consuming, will greatly enhance farming capabilities in the future.
