The government has announced a GH¢50,000 cash donation to the bereaved families of victims of the Sayerano police shooting incident in the Western North Region to support funeral arrangements.
The announcement was made by the Minister for the Interior, Alhaji Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, during a visit to the community alongside the Minister for Health and Member of Parliament for Sefwi Juaboso, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, and officials from the Western North Regional Police Command.
The visit was to express condolences to the affected families, engage traditional leaders and residents, and assess the situation following the tragic incident.
Addressing chiefs and community members, the Interior Minister said government was aware of the pain and challenges faced by families who lost their loved ones and had decided to provide financial assistance to support funeral arrangements.
He said, “President John Dramani Mahama has directed that a cash donation of fifty thousand Ghana cedis be given to the bereaved families to aid the funeral of the lost lives in the police shooting incident.”
The Minister also announced plans for the urgent construction of a police station in Sayerano, explaining that the growing population of the community required improved security services.
According to him, the establishment of the police station would help strengthen security and ensure residents have easier access to law enforcement services.
Alhaji Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak further disclosed that qualified family members of victims of the shooting incident would be considered in the second phase of security service recruitment.
“Government will, in the second batch of the security recruitment, help any victim’s family member who qualifies,” he said.
Traditional leaders in Sayerano welcomed the government’s intervention but appealed for additional support, particularly for the two victims who sustained gunshot injuries. They called for their transfer to a better-equipped medical facility for further assessment and treatment.
The leaders also expressed concerns about security in the community following the incident and appealed to the Interior Minister to facilitate the return of police personnel to Sayerano.
They said restoring security remains a priority for residents as investigations into the incident continue.
The Sayerano community has been mourning after the July 7, 2026 incident, where armed police personnel from the Sefwi Wiawso Divisional Command reportedly stormed the community to arrest a suspected drug peddler.
During the operation, the suspect was allegedly subjected to severe beatings, leading some residents to intervene. The situation escalated, resulting in gunfire that left five people shot and two others dead.
Eight police officers who were allegedly involved in the incident have since been interdicted pending investigations.
