Ghanaian medical students who are on government scholarship in Cuba are facing a difficult situation as the government has failed to release their stipends for the past eight months. The students, who were promised monthly payments by the Scholarship Secretariat, say they are now living in “hell” and feel neglected by the state.
In an interview on Accra-based 3FM, a spokesperson for the students said they have been forced to rely on friends in other countries for money, which is not sustainable in the long run. The students revealed that they have been surviving through complex means, which have been detrimental to their academic pursuits.
Despite promises by the Ghana embassy that they are working on the issue, the students say nothing has been done to resolve the situation. Under the agreement with the Scholarship Secretariat, the students were supposed to receive $250 per month.
The stranded students are appealing to the government to release their stipends as soon as possible, so that they can continue their studies without any further disruptions.
