Ghana Successfully Evacuates All Citizens from Israel Amid Tensions
Ghana has completed the safe evacuation of all its citizens who sought government assistance to leave Israel, with Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa declaring the operation a success. The evacuees, including diplomatic staff from Ghana’s Embassy in Tel Aviv, arrived safely in Ghana on Thursday, March 19, 2026.
In a statement on his official Facebook page, Minister Ablakwa confirmed that all Ghanaians who requested evacuation had been safely returned home. “Our evacuation operation in Israel has been a success. We have safely evacuated all Ghanaians who expressed the desire to be assisted by the Government of Ghana out of Israel,” he wrote.
While the operation covered the majority of embassy personnel, Ablakwa clarified that a skeleton staff remains in Israel to continue providing essential consular services to Ghanaians still in the region. “Government has decided to leave behind a few critical staff for necessary consular support,” he added.
The Minister extended gratitude to Israeli and Egyptian authorities for their cooperation, noting that the evacuation route involved transit through Egypt, aligning with regional logistical needs amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions.
The successful evacuation comes at a time of rising concern in the Middle East due to the escalating Israel-US-Iran conflict. Several countries, including Ghana, have taken precautionary measures to ensure the safety of their citizens in the region.
President John Mahama’s administration had earlier assured the public of its commitment to the safety and welfare of Ghanaians abroad, with Minister Ablakwa further emphasizing that Ghana will continue to prioritize evacuation efforts should the situation worsen.
