In a bold move to secure Ghana’s position as a leader in Artificial Intelligence (AI), President John Dramani Mahama officially launched the country’s National AI Strategy, setting a clear vision to make Ghana a major AI hub in West Africa and beyond.
Speaking at the launch, President Mahama emphasised that the crucial question for Ghana was not whether AI will shape the future, but how the nation can harness its potential while staying true to its values and development goals. He pointed out that the government’s focus is to ensure that Ghanaians lead the way in this technological revolution, rather than being left behind.
“Transformation must go beyond rhetoric,” the President stated, urging a results-driven approach that will provide tangible benefits to the people. He revealed that the AI strategy, which will span over a decade, is already being translated into actionable policies and frameworks aimed at practical implementation. The strategy is expected to roll out with a focus on clear targets and disciplined execution, with oversight from a newly established Responsible Artificial Intelligence Office.
In line with the vision, the President stressed the importance of a people-centred approach. Plans have been laid out to upskill and reskill the public sector workforce, preparing them for the opportunities and challenges AI presents. The strategy also includes supporting workers across all sectors to adapt to and thrive in a rapidly changing digital economy.
Hon. Samuel Nartey George, the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, also affirmed the government’s commitment to bolstering Ghana’s digital infrastructure. He highlighted ongoing investments in 4G and 5G connectivity, which will support AI innovation across the country.
With this national strategy, Ghana is setting a course not only to be a major player in AI but also to ensure that the transformation fosters inclusive growth and empowerment for all citizens. The successful execution of the strategy will rely on a collaborative effort, with a strong focus on accountability and measurable outcomes.
