Ghana marks 30 years since the inauguration of its fourth Republican Parliament on January 7, 1993, following 11 years of military rule.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) dominated the first Parliament of the fourth Republic, winning 189 out of 200 seats, including 16 women.

Over the years, the number of seats has increased to 230 in 2006 and 275 in 2013. The current Parliament, the 8th of the fourth Republic, has introduced some new dynamics in democratic governance, including the first time that the two major political parties have held the same number of seats, resulting in a hung Parliament. There are also a record number of 40 women among the 275 members and the first Speaker of Parliament with no political ties to the party of the executive government.

Since the fourth Republic, Parliament has enacted over 1000 bills, including the Right to Information Act and the Private Members Bill of 2020, and has repealed others such as the Criminal Libel law.

To celebrate this 30 year milestone, various activities and events will be held throughout the year.
