The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has announced that motorists and commuters should expect traffic disruptions on the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange to Kaneshie First Light stretch of the Darkuman-Kaneshie Highway as work begins under the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project.
Although the Mayor did not disclose the exact date for the closure, he said the road will be affected once the project officially commences.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with 3news, Mr. Allotey explained that ongoing GARID works around the Accra Academy Senior High School section of the highway have delayed planned maintenance on the Kaneshie Footbridge.
He noted that the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) cannot carry out major interventions on the road and footbridge until the GARID project is completed.
The Mayor has appealed to drivers and commuters to cooperate with authorities during the period, adding that additional traffic task forces will be deployed to manage vehicular movement and reduce congestion.
The GARID Project follows the devastating floods recorded on June 29, with experts indicating that its completion will significantly improve drainage systems in Accra and help reduce the impact of future flooding.
