Former Ashanti Regional Minister and Member of Parliament (MP) for Asunafo South, Hon Eric Opoku, has urged Ghanaians not to assume that all MPs are wealthy and living in luxury.
He explained that most MPs invest significant amounts of money in their constituencies in order to retain their seats in the next election, which can leave them financially strained.
Hon Eric Opoku shared a story of one of his colleague MPs, who he chose not to name, who died shortly after losing an election due to financial difficulties.
He explained that the MP had taken out a loan to fund his Primaries campaign but lost, and as a result, his car was repossessed to pay off the debt. He was left unable to feed himself and was teased by people in his hometown for not achieving anything as an MP. He died less than two weeks after a conversation with Hon Eric Opoku.
Hon Eric Opoku emphasized that there are several other former MPs who have become poor and are struggling to take care of themselves. Some of them cannot afford to buy basic items like batteries for their cars and must rely on the support of current MPs for medical care when they fall ill.
In conclusion, Hon Eric Opoku urged Ghanaians to understand that not all MPs are wealthy and to recognize the sacrifices that many of them make to serve their constituencies.
