Former Chelsea defender Gary Cahill has taken to social media to encourage people to bid on a signed Chelsea FC shirt as part of an auction of personal items to raise funds for the completion of a school in Ghana that was started by his late teammate, Christian Atsu. Atsu, who served as an ambassador for the charity Arms Around the Child, tragically passed away on February 18, 2023, following an earthquake in Turkey.
To support the charity, Chelsea has also announced that it will be auctioning off jerseys worn by players during their match against Everton, along with other items. The funds raised will be directed towards the completion of the school in Ghana that Atsu was building before his untimely death.
According to a statement by Chelsea, the auction, which includes signed shirts from the entire squad as well as memorabilia from club legends, will run until 2 pm on April 8th. All proceeds from the auction will go to Arms Around the Child, the charity that Atsu had been supporting as an ambassador.
Atsu, who spent five years with Chelsea but never made a first-team appearance before joining Everton, was laid to rest in his hometown of Ada on March 17, 2022. By supporting the completion of the school he started building in Ghana, his legacy will continue to live on.
