Fire Safety Week: Dormaa Municipal Fire Commander reveals underlying causes of fire outbreaks

The Dormaa Central Municipal Fire Commander, DOIII Eunice Adwoa Serwaa, has unveiled the underlying causes of domestic and bush fire outbreaks across Dormaa Central and the nation at large.

During a sensitization program on GIFTs FM Morning Show, as part of the Fire Safety Week celebration, DOIII Eunice Adwoa Serwaa highlighted that hunters contribute to fire outbreaks in the country, alongside individuals who use substandard cables for their electronic appliances. She further noted that negligence and a lack of attention to leaking gas cylinders significantly contribute to fire outbreaks within the country. She, therefore, urged the public to pay critical attention to repairing their gas cylinders at the first sign of leakage.

In response to the persistent fire outbreaks, despite the awareness campaigns of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), she conveyed her dismay at the public’s disregard for the guidance provided by the service, which has resulted in an increase in fire incidents. She noted that numerous locations require fire extinguishers, yet there is a troubling reluctance to install them. She stressed that fire extinguishers serve as an initial line of defense against fires and should be installed in all public areas to ensure safety.

She stated that, notwithstanding the public’s reluctance to heed the guidance and awareness efforts of the Ghana National Fire Service, the service will persist in amplifying their educational initiatives to diminish the incidence of fire outbreaks in the country. She further emphasized the importance of consulting the fire service when drafting building plans to ensure safety.

On her part, GOII Annah Berma, from the education department of the Dormaa Central Municipal Fire Station, expressed concern over the way Pragya riders and motorists disregard the sirens of the Dormaa fire thunder during their emergency responses.

She noted that these same motorists and Pragya riders often ignore the no-parking signs in front of the fire station, which occasionally obstruct their operations. She thus called for the immediate cessation of these practices to enable the fire service to perform their duties without interference.
