In the early hours of today, a devastating fire swept through the Kantamanto Market in Accra’s Central Business District, destroying numerous shops and leaving traders in despair.

The blaze, which started around 1:00 a.m., engulfed large sections of the market, causing significant damage to property and goods worth millions of cedis. Firefighters have been working tirelessly to contain the inferno, with thirteen fire tenders deployed across the Greater Accra Region to tackle the outbreak.

Eyewitnesses reported that the fire spread rapidly due to the tightly packed nature of the market’s structures, making it difficult for traders to salvage their goods. “We woke up to the sound of chaos and saw the market in flames. It’s heartbreaking to see so many livelihoods destroyed,” a resident recounted.

Despite the efforts of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the intensity of the flames and the market’s narrow pathways posed significant challenges in controlling the fire. Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the blaze, but investigations are underway.

For many traders, Kantamanto Market is their sole source of income. The destruction has displaced hundreds, leaving them uncertain about their future. One trader lamented, “Everything I own is gone. I don’t know how I will recover from this.”

This fire marks yet another tragedy for Kantamanto, a hub for economic activity and trade in the region. Calls are mounting for the government and relevant agencies to provide relief and support to the affected traders, as well as to implement measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

As the ashes settle, the focus remains on bringing the situation under control and assisting those impacted by the disaster. Updates on the extent of the damage and the ongoing firefighting efforts will be provided as more information becomes available.
