Surv. Prof. Emmanuel Bamfo-Agyei Calls for Urgent Safety Reforms After Budumburam Tragedy
During a recent interview on Ideal FM 96.7’s morning show Ghana Wonsom, hosted by BIC Abeiku Okai, construction expert and lecturer at Cape Coast Technical University, Surv. Prof. Emmanuel Bamfo-Agyei, shed light on the tragic rock blasting incident at Budumburam. The event, which occurred during the construction of a road in the area, led to the death of three people and left several others critically injured.
Surv. Prof. Bamfo-Agyei explained that the disaster could have been avoided had proper risk and safety plans been in place. According to him, the contractor involved in the project failed to conduct a thorough risk assessment prior to the blasting of the heavy rock, overlooking the potential hazards to the surrounding area. He emphasized that there was a lack of proper safety precautions, and no measures were taken to identify or mitigate the dangerous effects of the blasting.
Additionally, Surv. Prof. Bamfo-Agyei expressed concern about the lack of a regulatory body overseeing construction projects in Ghana, noting that this contributes to the frequent neglect of safety protocols. He pointed out that contractors often fail to implement necessary safety measures, putting both workers and the public at risk.
He also highlighted that there was no proper diversion of the road during the construction, which compounded the danger for nearby residents and road users. The proximity of people living near the construction site further worsened the impact of the incident.
Surv. Prof. Bamfo-Agyei’s comments raise crucial questions about the state of Ghana’s construction industry and underscore the need for stricter regulations and enforcement to prevent future tragedies.
