Aspiring Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has criticised the government’s economic performance, claiming that the cost of living in Ghana is now higher than it was when the National Democratic Congress (NDC) took office in 2024.
Mr Aboagye said prices of essential services including electricity, water, transport and school fees have increased, while unemployment and food prices continue to rise.
His comments come after Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson stated during the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review that the government’s economic recovery programme remains on track.
The Finance Minister said the reduction of the policy rate to 14% in July has created opportunities for businesses to access cheaper credit and expand their operations.
Presenting the budget review in Parliament on Thursday, July 23, Dr Ato Forson said Ghana had achieved its targets for the first half of 2026 and was on course to meet its end-year target of 1.5% of GDP.
He also noted that investor confidence had been restored, adding that major macroeconomic indicators had improved due to what he described as sound economic management.
However, in a Facebook post, Mr Aboagye rejected the government’s assessment of the economy, arguing that the country has lost valuable time under the NDC administration.
He claimed that Ghanaians are facing higher electricity bills, increased water tariffs, rising transport costs, higher school fees, unemployment and expensive food prices.
Mr Aboagye further suggested that Ghanaians would return the NPP to power in 2028, giving former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia the opportunity to lead the country.
I believe the economy has become harder for many Ghanaians, with rising costs of living affecting electricity, water, transport, education and food prices. The government must do more to improve the lives of citizens.
