Tension has escalated within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Awutu Senya East Constituency of the Central Region after aggrieved branch executives locked up the party’s constituency office in Kasoa to protest the suspension of Constituency Chairman, Stephen Ofosu Agyare, by the party’s National Secretary, Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey.
The executives, who described the suspension as unfair and politically motivated, also handed the office keys to the Zongo Ward leadership, insisting the office will remain closed until the decision is reversed.
Confusion has engulfed the Awutu Senya East Constituency following the suspension of Constituency Chairman Stephen Ofosu Agyare over allegations surrounding his relationship with the area’s Member of Parliament, Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor.
The suspension has sparked outrage among several branch executives, who believe the action was taken without adequate consultation and due process.
On Thursday, scores of angry party executives stormed the constituency office in Kasoa, locked the premises, and took away the keys, effectively bringing party activities at the office to a standstill.
According to the protesters, they intercepted information that the constituency’s Vice Chairman was being prepared to be sworn in as Acting Chairman following the suspension of Mr. Ofosu Agyare.
The executives vowed to resist any attempt to install a new acting chairman, insisting that the suspended chairman remains their legitimate leader until the matter is resolved.
They warned the National Executives of the NDC to immediately revoke the suspension, stressing that failure to do so could create deep divisions within the constituency and negatively affect the party’s fortunes ahead of future elections.
The aggrieved executives further declared that they would intensify their protest if the suspension is not reversed, saying they are prepared to make the constituency “ungovernable” for party activities until justice is served.
Meanwhile, the Zongo Ward Organizer, Awudu Mohammed, reaffirmed that the constituency office will remain under lock and key until the National Executive Committee reinstates Mr. Stephen Ofosu Agyare.
He called on the party’s national leadership to intervene immediately to restore calm and unity within the Awutu Senya East Constituency.
