Akufo-Addo Highlights Sports Infrastructure Achievements in Final State of the Nation Address

In his final State of the Nation Address on January 3, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo emphasized the significant progress made in Ghana’s sports infrastructure under his administration.

The President highlighted the construction of over 150 AstroTurf pitches and the rehabilitation of existing sports facilities, describing them as crucial to the country’s sporting development.

“The construction of some 150 Astroturf pitches across the country and the rehabilitation of existing stadia have bolstered Ghana’s standard as a hub for international sports, including hosting the 2023 All African Games successfully, despite all odds,” he stated.

Ghana hosted the 13th African Games from March 8 to 23, 2024, welcoming over 13,000 athletes and officials from across the continent at ten venues. The nation secured 69 medals during the competition.

The government invested approximately $195 million in infrastructure for the Games, including the new Borteyman Sports Complex and the University of Ghana Stadium.

However, despite these achievements, Ghana faced challenges in preparing the Accra Sports Stadium for the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, raising questions about the sustainability of sports infrastructure improvements.
