Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has responded to claims by the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, that some individuals are wishing for the failure of the institution.
According to Mr Afenyo-Markin, the concerns raised by critics of GoldBod should not be interpreted as hatred but rather as part of democratic accountability and the responsibility of citizens to question public institutions.
“Sammy Gyamfi, nobody hates you,” the Effutu Member of Parliament said, stressing that public officials must be prepared to accept scrutiny when managing state resources.
His comments follow remarks by the GoldBod CEO, who stated that the institution had no losses and that those hoping it would fail would be disappointed.
Mr Gyamfi had argued that GoldBod’s performance had proven its critics wrong, insisting that the institution was achieving its mandate and contributing positively to Ghana’s gold sector.
However, Afenyo-Markin urged government officials to focus on transparency and allow independent assessment of their work rather than viewing criticism as political hostility.
He said institutions established with public funds must operate in a manner that earns the confidence of Ghanaians, adding that constructive criticism is necessary for good governance.
The debate over GoldBod’s operations continues, with both supporters and critics weighing in on its impact on Ghana’s gold industry and the wider economy.
