The Ghana Education Service (GES) is set to reopen its teacher recruitment portal in November 2026 to recruit an additional 8,000 teachers, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has announced.
The recruitment opportunity will be reserved specifically for graduates from the 2023 batch of Colleges of Education as part of government’s efforts to address concerns over delays in teacher employment.
Speaking at the 68th Anniversary Speech and Prize-Giving Day celebration of Pope John Senior High School and Minor Seminary (POJOSS) in Koforidua, Eastern Region, Mr. Iddrisu said the move is aimed at creating a fair opportunity for qualified teacher trainees who have been waiting to be employed.
He disclosed that the first phase of the current recruitment exercise, which selected 7,000 teachers through a merit-based and transparent process, will be completed with successful applicants receiving their appointment letters and reporting to work by August 30, 2026.
According to the Minister, the GES recruitment portal will officially reopen on November 15, 2026, for the additional 8,000 vacancies.
He explained that restricting the recruitment to the 2023 graduating class is intended to correct what he described as an imbalance in the system.
“I intend to use that to correct an anomaly. The 8,000 category will be for the 2023 graduating students teachers only,” he said.
Mr. Iddrisu added that after addressing the employment needs of the 2023 cohort, government will consider another recruitment opportunity for the 2024 batch of teacher trainees.
The initiative, he said, forms part of broader measures to reduce unemployment among trained teachers and strengthen staffing levels within the education sector.
