The Member of Parliament for Tano North, Dr Gideon Boako, says rising prices of essential commodities and fuel are revealing challenges within Ghana’s economy despite government’s claims of economic recovery.

According to him, the end of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme has exposed what he describes as weaknesses in the government’s economic management.

“The IMF programme is over. The economy is naked again. After all, the much-talked-about resilience by government was just a hoax,” Dr Boako stated in a Facebook post.

He also questioned the quality of the government’s fiscal consolidation efforts, arguing that the measures being implemented are affecting development.

“It is more of development suppression than fiscal consolidation. Fuel prices, tomato prices, and so on are really showing the skin of the economy,” he added.

His comments come after Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson defended the government’s economic policies, insisting that deliberate reforms have helped stabilise the economy.

Presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Statement in Parliament, Dr Forson said the Mahama administration inherited an economy affected by excessive borrowing, reckless spending, and poor accountability.

He argued that key economic indicators have improved significantly under the government’s management, adding that Ghana’s progress is the result of deliberate policy decisions.

The Finance Minister further cautioned against a return to the economic conditions that contributed to the 2022 financial crisis, which he attributed to poor policy choices and excessive borrowing.
