The government has accepted the recommendation of the Constitution Review Commission (CRC) to abolish the death penalty in Ghana as part of proposed constitutional reforms.
The recommendation seeks to replace capital punishment with life imprisonment, arguing that the state must uphold the sanctity of human life and prevent the possibility of irreversible errors within the justice system.
The CRC, in its report, noted that Ghana’s justice system must continue to evolve in line with human rights principles and global trends towards the abolition of the death penalty.
Government’s acceptance of the proposal means that the necessary constitutional amendments will be required before the death penalty can be fully removed from Ghana’s laws.
Although Ghana has not carried out an execution since 1993, courts have continued to have the power to impose death sentences in certain cases.
The proposed reform has sparked renewed public discussion, with human rights groups welcoming the move while others continue to debate whether life imprisonment should replace capital punishment.
If successfully implemented, the change will mark a major shift in Ghana’s criminal justice system and end decades of debate over the future of the death penalty.
