Ghana today remembers the 14th anniversary of the passing of former President John Evans Atta Mills, who died on July 24, 2012, after being rushed to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.
The death of President Mills, who was 68 years old, came as a shock to many Ghanaians and the international community. His passing occurred just three days after he celebrated his birthday and a few months before the end of his first term as President.
Although the official cause of his death was not publicly disclosed, it was known that President Mills had been dealing with health challenges and had travelled to the United States for medical treatment before his return to Ghana.
Following the announcement of his death, then Vice President John Dramani Mahama was sworn in as President later the same day, in accordance with Ghana’s constitutional provisions.
President Mills, who served as Ghana’s third President under the Fourth Republic, was remembered for his calm leadership style, commitment to peace, and efforts to promote good governance during his time in office.
As Ghana reflects on his legacy, many continue to honour his contribution to the country’s democratic journey and his role in shaping the nation’s political history.
