The Ghanaian government has declined a request for a state visit by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa over concerns about recent xenophobic attacks targeting Ghanaians and other African migrants in South Africa.

Sources at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told 3News that the decision follows a rise in anti-foreigner violence, which has led to the repatriation of about 1,000 Ghanaians, while another 900 have reportedly registered to return home.

The move comes after reports that a Ghanaian was killed on June 30 during protests by xenophobic groups against African migrants.

Government sources said Ghana remains deeply concerned about the safety and dignity of its citizens abroad, adding that the protection of Ghanaians is a priority. They also expressed concerns that hosting President Ramaphosa at this time could trigger negative reactions amid the current tensions.

The government has reportedly communicated its position to South Africa, calling for concrete measures to address the attacks and ensure the safety of Ghanaian nationals before any future state visit can take place.
