The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed shock and deep concern over the remand of its Bono Regional Chairman, Mr. Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, by the Adenta Circuit Court. He is to remain in custody at the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) until the final determination of his case. The party noted that if the case extends for six months, a year, or longer, Mr. Baffoe could remain in detention for an extended period.
“This is not just an attack on one man. It is an attack on every Ghanaian who believes in freedom, justice, and the right to speak truth to power. We reject it, condemn it, and will resist it through every lawful and democratic means available to us,” said NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong in a statement.
The party further alleged that the Presidency is behind the arrest, calling it part of a “carefully planned political agenda.” The statement added that opposition officials are being targeted, with fabricated charges brought against party communicators and activists.
Former Vice President and 2024 NPP presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, also condemned the arrests, describing them as politically motivated actions that undermine democracy and free speech. He expressed concern over the “endless assault” on NPP officers, activists, and supporters since the National Democratic Congress (NDC) assumed office on January 7, 2025.
Dr. Bawumia cited recent cases, including the arrest and release of social media commentator David Essandoh over comments on the return of power outages (“dumsor”), and the detention of Mr. Baffoe, as examples of intimidation. He alleged an “unholy collaboration” between the Executive, state investigative bodies, and elements within the judiciary to target opposition members.
“These actions undermine free speech and are setting Ghana’s democracy backwards,” he said, warning that public officials involved in such abuses of state power would eventually be held accountable.
Dr. Bawumia urged NPP supporters to remain steadfast, continue holding the government accountable, and resist intimidation. “We fought hard for this democracy, and as a party, we cannot surrender it to intimidation from those who possess temporary power today,” he stated.
