Former Vice President and 2024 NPP presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of undermining democracy and free speech through politically motivated arrests, detentions, and intimidation of opposition supporters.
In a statement on Wednesday, May 13, Dr. Bawumia expressed deep concern over what he described as an “endless assault” on the rights of NPP officers, activists, and supporters nationwide.
He claimed that arrests, detentions, and “unconscionable bail conditions” have become increasingly common since the NDC assumed office on January 7, 2025. Dr. Bawumia cited the recent arrest and release of social media commentator David Essandoh for commenting on the return of power outages, known as “dumsor,” as well as the detention of NPP Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe Abronye, popularly known as Abronye DC.
“The latest acts of intimidation include the detention of David Essandoh for lamenting about dumsor on social media and the unusual incarceration of NPP Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe Abronye,” he said.
Dr. Bawumia further alleged an “unholy collaboration” between the Executive, state investigative agencies, and elements of the judiciary aimed at intimidating opposition members. “These actions undermine free speech and are rolling back Ghana’s democracy,” he warned.
He also issued a stern message to public officials involved in what he called abuses of state power: “The day of accountability will come, and those who abuse state power will be held responsible.”
Finally, Dr. Bawumia urged NPP supporters to remain steadfast, continue holding the government accountable, and resist intimidation. “We fought hard for this democracy, and as a party, we cannot surrender it to those who hold temporary power today,” he added.
