The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has criticised the government for failing to implement meaningful reforms in the energy sector, even as electricity tariffs rise and a GH¢1 fuel levy is introduced.

In an exclusive interview on TV3 on Tuesday, May 12, Afenyo-Markin said the government has increased electricity tariffs by up to 30% without instituting substantial reforms to make the sector sustainable.

“The government made huge promises when they assumed office, but they have yet to embark on any serious reforms,” he said. “They pledged to reform the energy sector, yet what we have seen instead are repeated tariff hikes.”

He emphasised that improving revenue collection within the energy sector is crucial to prevent funds meant for essential services such as education and healthcare from being diverted to settle debts owed to Independent Power Producers.

Afenyo-Markin also criticised the GH¢1 fuel levy, widely dubbed the “dumsor levy,” arguing that consumers are being burdened without seeing tangible improvements in the sector.

“If you ask the Energy Minister today about real results, there is nothing to show,” he asserted.
