President John Dramani Mahama has emphasized that the government’s Reset Agenda is centered on rethinking the delivery of housing, infrastructure, and economic opportunities, stressing that decent housing should be a right for all Ghanaians, not a privilege for a few.

He made the remarks while breaking ground for the Green City Housing Project at Dedesua in Kumasi, describing the initiative as a significant milestone in Ghana’s evolving housing agenda, aimed at providing affordable and dignified homes for citizens.

Addressing dignitaries at the sod-cutting ceremony, President Mahama noted that Ghana faces a housing deficit of over 1.5 million units, requiring urgent intervention to tackle challenges such as rapid urbanization, rising construction costs, and limited access to affordable financing.

He highlighted several government initiatives to address the deficit, including the completion of the Saglemi Affordable Housing Project, district-level social housing programs, and a low-cost housing scheme for public sector workers in collaboration with organized labour and financial institutions.

President Mahama also announced plans for a GH¢3 billion revolving housing fund, involving government, organized labour, SSNIT, and financial institutions, to support long-term mortgage financing for workers. He explained that homes under this scheme would be indexed in cedis rather than dollars, protecting homeowners from exchange rate fluctuations.

The President further affirmed the government’s commitment to reforming the rental housing sector, improving affordability, and ensuring fairness and dignity for tenants nationwide.

Commending Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for donating 200 acres of land for the project, President Mahama revealed that the Green City Housing Project would deliver over 1,000 housing units within an integrated, environmentally sustainable community.
