Today marks exactly 25 years since Ghana experienced one of the darkest moments in its football history the tragic May 9 Stadium Disaster at the Accra Sports Stadium in 2001.

What was meant to be a thrilling clash between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko turned into a national tragedy as 127 innocent football fans lost their lives in a stampede following crowd disturbances and the firing of tear gas into the stands.

Twenty-five years later, the pain is still remembered. The cries, the confusion, and the heartbreaking loss of fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, and friends remain deeply etched in the history of Ghana football.

The May 9 Disaster became a painful lesson that changed football safety in Ghana and across Africa. It reminded the world that football is more than a game it is about humanity, passion, and protecting lives.

Today, we honour the memories of the 127 supporters who never returned home. Their legacy will never be forgotten.

May their souls continue to rest in perfect peace.
