We are not against Mining activities in Dormaa but the Shootings and killing is what the youth stand against – Assembly Member
The Assembly Member for Kosane Electoral Area in the Dormaa Central Municipality, Hon. Fosu Kingsford Kyei, has expressed concern regarding the shooting incidents occurring at illegal mining sites in Dormaa, particularly in the Dormaa East District which have resulted in numerous injuries among the youth, some fatalities, and have subsequently led to recent demonstrations in Kyeremasu.
Addressing the Bono Regional Minister on behalf of Nananom of Kosane and its surrounding areas, the Assembly Member clarified that, although there is one registered mining company in Dormaa, the unrest in Kyeremasu is not rooted in opposition to mining activities. Instead, the youth are protesting against the persistent shootings at illegal mining sites, which have resulted in injuries and fatalities, a situation he described as unjust and in need of urgent attention.
He urged the Chairmen of the Municipal Security Committee (MUSEC), the District Security Committee (DISEC), and the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), who are the MCE of Dormaa Central, the DCE of Dormaa East, and the Bono Regional Minister, respectively, to implement security measures aimed at preventing the establishment of unauthorized task forces by individuals, which have led to killings under the guise of combating illegal mining to enhance the security situation in the mining areas and throughout the Bono Region.
Hon. Fosu Kingsford Kyei further stated that the Kosane Electoral Area is experiencing a substantial shortage of furniture in the three schools within the area, resulting in discomfort for students in their classrooms.
He has urged the regional Minister to provide assistance. He also expressed concern regarding the absence of computers for computing education in this modern era, where technology and digitalization dominate globally. He appealed for support to equip the schools with computers to enhance ICT education and adequately prepare the students in digital literacy.
