Former Ghana international, Sammy Kuffuor, has called on Ghanaians to unite behind the incoming head coach of the national football team, Carlos Queiroz, urging the public to be patient as the Black Stars embark on a new chapter under his leadership. Queiroz, who is set to replace Otto Addo, will be officially unveiled later this week in Ghana. The highly experienced coach, known for his vast knowledge of African football, will take on the task of leading Ghana to its fifth FIFA World Cup appearance.
Queiroz’s tenure is set to begin immediately, with the Black Stars scheduled to face Wales and Mexico in friendly matches in May, before the World Cup in June. Ghana will compete in a tough group featuring England, Croatia, and Panama.
While some sections of the public have expressed concerns about Queiroz’s traditionally defensive tactics, Kuffuor dismissed these reservations, questioning whether Ghana has truly been an attacking team in recent years. Reflecting on the national team’s recent tactical style, he noted that the Black Stars have often played with a defensive setup, even in matches against lower-ranked teams like Comoros.
“For me, [Ghana’s struggles] is not about the coach. Have we been offensive in recent years? Playing Comoros, we were playing three at the back. Are we not defensive?” Kuffuor remarked.
The former Bayern Munich defender emphasized that with the appointment now official, the focus should be on rallying behind the new coach rather than continuing debates. He warned that ongoing criticism could disrupt the team’s stability at such a critical juncture.
“Whether we like it or not, we’ve already signed him, so we should give him the necessary support. Critics here and there will not help,” Kuffuor stressed.
Kuffuor also underscored the importance of unity among fans and stakeholders, urging Ghanaians to support Queiroz, regardless of personal opinions. He called for a collective effort, saying, “We can criticize whatever, but he is going to sit on the bench. My advice to every Ghanaian, let’s support him.”
In addition to public backing, Kuffuor highlighted the need for Queiroz to build a strong technical team with a deep understanding of the Ghanaian football landscape. He advised the new coach to surround himself with individuals who are familiar with the local game and have experience within the system.
“I’ll also advise that he gets people who understand Ghana football, who have played there and tasted it,” Kuffuor added.
As the Black Stars gear up for the World Cup, the coming weeks will be crucial in shaping the team’s direction. With expectations high, Kuffuor’s message is clear: unity and support will be key to Ghana’s success on the global stage.
