The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced that trading activities will be strictly prohibited on the Kaneshie footbridge once ongoing rehabilitation works are completed.

According to the AMA’s Head of Public Affairs, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, the decision forms part of efforts to maintain safety and ensure the free movement of pedestrians using the facility. He noted that enforcement measures will be put in place to prevent traders from returning to the bridge after the project is completed.

The Kaneshie footbridge was closed on April 2, 2026, following concerns about its structural condition and the safety of users. Authorities say the rehabilitation works are expected to take between six and nine months to complete.

Mr. Ankrah indicated that the Assembly has identified alternative trading spaces within nearby markets for affected traders and urged them to cooperate with the directive. He stressed that the move is necessary to prevent congestion and reduce risks associated with overcrowding on the bridge.

The AMA has reiterated its commitment to ensuring public safety and maintaining order within the central business district, adding that the ban will be strictly enforced once the facility is reopened.
