“From the Cross to National Renewal: John Dramani Mahama Inspires Hope at Independence Square Easter Gathering”

Thousands of worshippers converged on Independence Square for this year’s Good Friday Miracle Service organised by Lighthouse Chapel International, under the leadership of Bishop Dag Heward-Mills.

The spiritually charged gathering, which has become a significant feature on Ghana’s religious calendar, brought together Christians from across the country for prayer, reflection and renewal during the Easter season.

Delivering an address as Special Guest of Honour, President John Dramani Mahama underscored the profound meaning of Good Friday, describing it as a reminder of the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

“Good Friday tells the story of a love so deep and radical that it has transformed humanity for over 2,000 years,” he said, referencing John 15:13. “There can be no greater love than laying down one’s life for another, and that is the very essence of Easter.”

The President challenged leaders, particularly those in positions of authority, to reflect on their responsibilities. He posed a critical question: “With the power entrusted to us as politicians, do we serve or do we exploit?”

He emphasised that Easter should not merely be a commemoration of Christ’s sacrifice but a call to action for individuals to embody the values of sacrifice, integrity and service.

President Mahama further noted that Ghana stands at a pivotal moment in its history, acknowledging the economic and social challenges facing the nation. He assured citizens of ongoing efforts to stabilise the economy, restore investor confidence and rebuild a country that serves the interests of all Ghanaians.

“The true test of a nation,” he stated, “is not how it behaves in times of comfort, but how it responds to adversity.”

Responding to sentiments suggesting Ghana could be better managed under foreign rule, the President firmly rejected such notions. “We can build a nation we are all proud of if we set our minds to it,” he declared, drawing a parallel between the resurrection of Christ and the nation’s journey through hardship towards progress.

Touching on global concerns, President Mahama extended prayers to those affected by conflict in the Middle East, particularly in Israel, and called for peace, restraint and respect for human dignity.

“Ghana stands for peace, justice and human dignity. We must be part of the solution, not the problem,” he added.

He urged citizens to rise above division, nurture hope for future generations and remain steadfast in their commitment to national unity and development. Quoting Galatians 6:9, he encouraged perseverance in doing good, stressing that true transformation comes from the character of the people rather than policies alone.

“Before resurrection, there was a cross. Before victory, there is sacrifice,” he said. “The question we must ask ourselves is whether we are willing to sacrifice for our communities and our nation.”

The President also reiterated his call from the previous year for Ghanaians to demonstrate genuine Christ-like love, noting that the Good Friday Miracle Service has evolved into more than a religious gathering.

“It is now a national moment of reflection, unity and prayer for Ghana’s peace and prosperity,” he observed, urging citizens to match their prayers with responsible action.

Meanwhile, the Office of the Presidential Envoy for Interfaith and Ecumenical Relations has hinted at an even larger national religious engagement in July.

In an interview, Hon Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah, revealed that this year’s National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service is expected to be unprecedented.

“Following the President’s powerful message at the Lighthouse Chapel Easter celebration, we are preparing for a massive National Prayer and Thanksgiving event that will bring together people of all faiths to seek divine guidance for Ghana,” he stated.

As Easter celebrations continue, President Mahama left Ghanaians with a message of hope: that despite current challenges, restoration and renewal remain possible if citizens remain united, committed and faithful in both word and action.
