The government has unveiled plans to recruit 7,000 teachers to strengthen Ghana’s education sector and address staffing shortages, especially in underserved communities. The announcement was made by the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, during a media briefing on Wednesday, April 1, 2026.

The Minister confirmed that the recruitment portal will officially open on April 10, 2026, for eligible applicants.

“I am pleased to announce that the Ministry of Education has received clearance from the Ministry of Finance to proceed with the recruitment of teachers nationwide. At least 7,000 teachers will be recruited, with a focus on maintaining transparency and competitiveness throughout the process,” Iddrisu said.

He noted that graduates from the 2023, 2024, and 2025 cohorts are eligible to apply. However, priority will be given to those willing to serve in rural and underserved areas.

The initiative aims to create employment opportunities for trained teachers while addressing the imbalance in teacher distribution across the country. Concerns have risen in recent years over shortages in rural areas, where many schools struggle to find qualified educators, while urban centres face challenges with teacher placement.
