A tragic building collapse in Accra New Town has resulted in three fatalities, with 20 survivors currently receiving medical treatment in various hospitals. Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak confirmed the latest figures, describing the incident as a “very sad day” for the community.

The collapse occurred on Sunday at an uncompleted building situated within the compound of the Accra New Town Experimental Basic School. The structure was reportedly used for worship on weekends, raising concerns that more people could have been trapped at the time of the disaster.

Preliminary reports indicate that 23 people were involved in the collapse. Sadly, three people – one male and two females – lost their lives. The identities of the deceased are still being withheld, pending official confirmation.

The 20 survivors, including 14 or 15 females and eight males, are receiving care at the 37 Military Hospital, Police Hospital, Greater Accra Regional Hospital, and a private facility. Among the survivors, seven are minors. Although some victims were initially cleared for discharge, they were held back for further observation to prevent complications.

Emergency teams from the Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Armed Forces, and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) worked tirelessly through the night to rescue those trapped. Sniffer dogs were also deployed to assist in locating any remaining victims under the rubble. With about 90-95% certainty, authorities believe no additional people remain trapped.

The Minister revealed that the municipal assembly had previously issued a warning against using the building. However, it is still unclear why the structure continued to be used.

A full investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the collapse and to prevent similar incidents in the future. The government has expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and the affected church community, while commending the swift actions of emergency responders and local residents.
