The Ghana Police Service has pledged to conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations made by prominent Ghanaian visual artist Ibrahim Mahama, who claims he was assaulted by police officers in Tamale. This commitment follows a meeting between Mr. Mahama and the Inspector General of Police (IGP), along with members of the Police Management Board, on March 21.

DCOP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, the Director-General of Public Affairs, addressed the media after the meeting, confirming the IGP’s personal involvement in the case. She stated that the IGP had listened to Mr. Mahama’s account and assured him that investigations would continue to uncover the facts.

“Following the incident in Tamale on March 21, the IGP invited Mr. Ibrahim Mahama for a meeting. He was accompanied by his team, and together they discussed the incident in detail. The IGP has committed to getting to the bottom of the matter,” said DCOP Ansah-Akrofi.

She further emphasized that the Police Service had already launched an investigation immediately after the incident came to light. The IGP had directed the Police Professional Standards Bureau to begin inquiries, and both a criminal investigation and a professional conduct review are underway.

“Statements have been taken from Mr. Mahama and his team. The scene of the alleged incident has been visited, and we even checked on him at his residence,” she added.

In a recent update, the IGP escalated the matter, transferring it to the CID Headquarters for a more thorough investigation and urging the Director-General of the Police Professional Standards Bureau to expedite the process.

DCOP Ansah-Akrofi reassured the public that the Police Service is committed to working closely with Ibrahim Mahama throughout the investigation. “We will keep Mr. Mahama informed and involved as the investigation proceeds to ensure transparency and accountability.”

She also revealed that Mr. Mahama acknowledged his positive past relations with the Police Service during the meeting, emphasizing the unfortunate nature of the incident.

“If any officers are found to be at fault, they will be held accountable and face the full extent of the law,” she added.

DCOP Ansah-Akrofi urged the public to remain calm as the investigation progresses and assured that both Mr. Mahama and the public will be kept updated with any developments. “We urge the public to stay calm, and we will continue to keep everyone informed as both investigations unfold.”
