Ghana Records 1,038 Mpox Cases, 8 Deaths Since Outbreak Began – Health Minister
As of March 3, 2026, Ghana has confirmed 1,038 cases of Mpox (Monkeypox) with eight deaths, according to the Ministry of Health. The outbreak, which began in May 2025, has affected 124 districts across the country, with the Greater Accra and Western regions being the most impacted areas.
In a statement to Parliament on March 9, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh outlined the government’s response measures to contain the virus and protect public health. The Ministry, in collaboration with the Ghana Health Service and international partners, has activated a coordinated multi-sectoral response. While the outbreak has spread to 47.5% of districts nationwide, the situation remains under control, with only one patient currently hospitalized and no critical cases reported.

As part of the government’s efforts, Ghana has received 33,600 doses of the Mpox vaccine from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization. Over 31,000 individuals across the Ashanti, Greater Accra, and Western regions have already been vaccinated, achieving over 95% coverage of the targeted population. Minister Akandoh reassured the public that the government is covering medical expenses for affected patients to minimize the financial burden.
