Government Bans Land Transit of Rice, Mackerel and Tomato Puree to Protect Local Market

The Government of Ghana has placed a ban on the land transit of rice, mackerel and tomato puree as part of efforts to curb suspected diversion of goods and safeguard the local market.

The directive, announced by President John Dramani Mahama, adds the three food items to the growing list of products restricted from being transported through Ghana’s land borders under transit arrangements.

According to the government, the decision follows growing concerns that some goods declared as being in transit to neighbouring countries are often diverted and sold within the local market, resulting in revenue losses to the state and unfair competition for local producers.

Officials say the measure is intended to strengthen monitoring of imported goods and prevent abuse of the transit system.

Authorities believe the move will also help protect Ghana’s food market and support local industries by ensuring that imported products meant for other countries do not flood the domestic market through illegal channels.

The new restriction means that rice, mackerel and tomato puree will no longer be allowed to pass through Ghana’s land borders as transit goods to other countries.

Government has in recent months intensified efforts to clamp down on smuggling and transit diversion, a practice that has been blamed for undermining local businesses and reducing customs revenue.

Officials have hinted that additional measures could be introduced if abuses of the transit trade continue.

The latest directive forms part of broader government strategies aimed at strengthening border controls, protecting local industries and improving revenue mobilisation.
