Ahanta Chief appeals to Mahama to allocate Mpeasem concession to youth for cooperative mining.
The Ahanta Traditional Area has petitioned former President John Dramani Mahama over concerns about unauthorized mining activities and political interference in their lands. At a press conference in Agona Nkwanta, Nana Azulo Prah, the Otumfuo Badu Bonso Ahantahene Stool Supi, accused politically connected individuals of acquiring large tracts of land without consent from the Ahantahene Stool, which holds the allodial rights.
He highlighted the controversial 65-square-kilometer mining concession at Tunmento Abase Princess lands, which was approved without consultation. Nana Azulo Prah also pointed out that a company formed in 2022 had acquired a prospecting license covering significant areas in Ahanta, including Ntaakrom to Akyenim and Butre Ahuntumano, under the previous administration.
The dispute intensified over the Mpeasem Concession, originally granted to Eagle Eye Mining Limited but revoked in 2025. Nana Azulo Prah alleges that powerful figures are trying to reinstate these licenses, especially the Mpeasem Concession, for political gain. He also accused political leaders of acquiring nine concessions under the Community Mining Scheme, displacing the youth from their ancestral lands.
He called on the President, the Western Regional Minister, and the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources to ensure that the Mpeasem concession is handed to the Ahanta youth for a legitimate cooperative mining scheme, as well as other areas for the same purpose. The traditional authority warned that the youth are growing increasingly restless as they watch their resources being exploited without their consent.
