In a major infrastructure push announced during the 2026 State of the Nation Address (SONA), the government has revealed plans to commence construction of new regional airports in Sunyani, Bolgatanga, and Wa. The initiative is part of the administration’s broader strategy to improve national connectivity and stimulate economic development across all regions.

Speaking at the address, President Mahama emphasized that the airports are aimed at enhancing domestic travel, promoting tourism, and facilitating trade within Ghana and beyond. “These projects will not only create jobs during construction but will also open up opportunities for local businesses and attract investment to the regions,” he said.
The President added that the government is committed to ensuring that these airports meet international standards, providing modern facilities for both passengers and cargo services. This announcement aligns with other infrastructural projects highlighted in the SONA, including road expansions and regional development initiatives, signaling a holistic approach to national growth.

Residents and stakeholders in the Bono, Upper East, and Upper West regions have welcomed the news, expressing optimism that the new airports will reduce travel time to major cities and encourage economic activities in previously underserved areas.

The government has indicated that detailed plans, including timelines and funding arrangements, will be released in the coming months as part of its ongoing commitment to transparent project implementation.
