Excavator Ticketing Not Linked to Illegal Mining in Upper Denkyira East – MCE Anane Colman Clarifies

By Joseph Nana Yaw Cobbina
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Upper Denkyira East, Hon. George Anane Colman, has dismissed allegations linking the Assembly’s ticketing system to illegal mining activities in the municipality.
In an interview, Hon. Anane clarified that the Assembly’s sale of tickets and stickers is a long-standing revenue mobilization measure that predates his appointment as MCE. He emphasized that the system is not designed to endorse or support illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

According to him, the Assembly issues operational permits in the form of stickers to various categories of vehicles, including aboboyaa (motor tricycles), lowbeds, taxis, excavators, and tipper trucks.
He stressed that these stickers serve solely as permits for vehicles to operate within the municipality and should not be misconstrued as authorization for illegal mining activities.
“The Assembly does not sell stickers to machine owners to engage in any form of illegal mining,” he stated, by adding that the ticketing system applies broadly to all commercial vehicles and equipment operating in the area, not exclusively to excavators.
Hon. Anane further noted that upon assuming office, the Assembly engaged miners and other stakeholders in dialogue aimed at promoting responsible and lawful economic activities.
As a result, he said, many individuals previously involved in illegal mining have transitioned into legitimate businesses and other meaningful ventures.
He acknowledged that illegal mining remains a concern in parts of the municipality but assured residents that the Assembly is working diligently with relevant authorities to address and eliminate such activities.
The MCE also rejected claims circulating in sections of the media that the Assembly is complicit in illegal mining operations.
He explained that internally generated funds (IGF), including revenue from vehicle stickers and tickets, are essential for running the Assembly’s operations and supporting development initiatives.
Hon. Anane appealed to the media to exercise fairness and accuracy in their reporting, cautioning against publications that could damage reputations without basis.
He reiterated that Ghana is endowed with abundant natural resources that must be safeguarded and managed responsibly for the benefit of present and future generations.
